Some of the people I’ve talked to have said that it may not make any difference whether I use Drupal or WordPress, that I could still have the same problems. I even wrote to TypePad (!) to see if they’d import my Drupal archives if I set up an account with them. They said no, by the way, so that’s out.

Deleted all seven of my subdomains

Upgraded to Drupal 5.1

Reconfigured my robots.txt file so that ONLY Google can crawl my site

Disabled the modules I had on my site that generated dynamic content and were heavy on the database querying (the monthly archives module, the tagadelic module)

Changed to php4 as per this post

AND STILL, my site crashes the server. Obviously we’re still working out some issues, but it’s looking more and more like time for a major change.

The opinion of the expert seems to be that it would be easier to try upgrading to the newest version of Drupal than switching to WordPress. I was wondering about the status of the category links and the stable permalinks to posts, so maybe it’s best to try that upgrade first after all. It just seems like a stop gap, though. I want a stable blog that my hosting service doesn’t yank due to bot attacks every couple of years. And I do NOT want to have to pay for a dedicated server or the like. Sheesh — this blog only gets about 400 visits per day. But I want to stick with open source, too. Comments are open with no registration necessary, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.
